Last night a guy on foot approached a taxi driver with $50 and asked him to drive him to the nearest convenience store for milk and bread, saying that he couldn't walk any further. The taxi driver, who was on his way home for the evening, agreed. Once in the car, the unbelievable happened. The man shoved the driver out of the taxi and sped off with the car. Unfortunately for other motorists on the road, the man wasn't much of a driver. He began racing through residential neighborhoods crashing into cars as he went. The first car he hit had been parked at a stop sign and was just beginning to stick its nose out into a 4-way stop when the errant taxi came plowing through at a high rate of speed. Hitting the car, it went into a spin and came to a stop in the front yard of a nearby home. Luckily, the driver was only lightly injured but was sent to the hospital for observation.
As the taxi continued on its path of destruction, it came up behind an elderly couple driving a sedan. Instead of slowing down or going around the car, the taxi slammed into the rear end, throwing the couple into the dashboard. They were both suffering from shock when the ambulance took them away to the hospital, where they were treated for whiplash.
By this time, the police got wind of the car theft and began to trail the taxi, which was still going over the speed limit. The taxi headed for the highway leading out of town and when it arrived, proceeded to the entrance ramp. Unfortunately, a couple heading to a nearby restaurant for a night out with friends had pulled over to the side of the road to wait for their friends to catch up. The driver of the parked car opened his car door to take a first hand look down the road to see if he could spot them. That was really bad timing, because the taxi driver swooshed by and crashed into the door, leaving the man stunned with lacerations to his face.
With three police cars now in hot pursuit, the driver of the stolen taxi began to panic and go even faster. His next victim was a driver on the highway who saw the taxi coming and tried to get out of its way. Unfortunately, the young woman driving the car veered the wrong way and the taxi swiped her car, sending it into the adjacent lane of oncoming traffic. She was taken away by ambulance to the nearest hospital with serious injuries.
The taxi driver did not give up until he was actually surrounded by armed officers, at which time he jumped out of the taxi and tried to make a run for it. He was apprehended and awaits a court appearance.
